Skincare is no longer a habit associated exclusively with women. Men are increasingly investing in self-care, and consumer research is already reflecting this shift. A Kantar survey found that 72% of Brazilian men are interested in beauty products created for the male audience, up from 70% the previous year.

These figures mirror a change that is becoming visible in consumers’ everyday habits. Research carried out by Opinion Box for Grupo MedSystems shows that 41% of Brazilian men say they follow a skin-care routine. This suggests that skincare is increasingly being regarded as a practice connected with health, wellbeing and prevention, rather than simply an aesthetic concern.

A simple routine can make a difference

Despite growing interest, many people still assume that caring for the skin requires numerous products or complicated procedures. In reality, a straightforward, consistent routine can be enough to keep skin healthy and protected.

According to Luana Batista, educational coordinator, biomedical scientist and aesthetician at Raavi Dermocosméticos, male skin has particular characteristics that require attention. “Because of hormonal activity, it tends to be thicker and produce more oil. In addition, frequent shaving can contribute to irritation, sensitivity and ingrown hairs. A simple care routine helps to keep the skin balanced and healthy,” she explains.

The specialist stresses that consistency is the key to effective care. “We have noticed that many men are looking for a practical and efficient routine. It is important to understand that skincare does not mean an extensive sequence of products. Daily cleansing, moisturising and sun protection are enough to keep the skin healthy, prevent shaving-related irritation and minimise signs of ageing,” she says.

Step-by-step male skincare

Following a basic care routine can improve both the health and appearance of male skin. Here are the essential steps:

1. Cleansing

Start by washing the face with a facial cleanser suited to your skin type. Cleansing removes excess oil, sweat, pollution residue and impurities that build up during the day.

2. Moisturising

Moisturiser is necessary even for oily skin. Lightweight formulas help preserve the skin’s protective barrier without increasing unwanted shine.

3. Sun protection

Sunscreen should be used every day, including on cloudy days or when most of the day is spent indoors. Regular application helps prevent dark spots and premature ageing, while reducing damage caused by ultraviolet radiation.

4. Exfoliation

Exfoliating once or twice a week helps remove dead skin cells, unclog pores and reduce ingrown hairs, particularly for those who shave regularly.

Consider the skin’s individual needs

Batista says it is also important to respect the individual needs of the skin. “Not every skin type needs the same products. Paying attention to how the skin reacts and choosing suitable formulas makes all the difference in achieving results without causing irritation. If there is a specific condition, such as severe acne or persistent sensitivity, it is worth seeking professional advice,” she concludes.
