Many people still swear by false eyelashes, but an understated step in a make-up routine is currently creating entirely new wow effects.
Instead of false lashes and five coats of mascara, an increasing number of beauty fans are using a dedicated base beneath their mascara. One product in particular is gaining attention in chemists: Eveline Cosmetics’ Variete Lashes Show Lash Primer. The concept is straightforward: apply a creamy eyelash base first, followed by coloured mascara. This is said to make even fine lashes look as though individual clusters have been applied.
What an eyelash base actually does
A base beneath mascara may initially sound unnecessary. In practice, it works like an invisible foundation: the primer coats every lash with a light, slightly creamy layer. This creates a kind of “framework” to which the mascara film can adhere more effectively and appear more visible.
The primer adds density and length to the lashes before any colour is applied – and that is precisely what makes the difference.
The Variete Lashes Show Lash Primer has been deliberately formulated with a slightly creamier texture. Rather than being fluid like a conventional mascara film, it has a lightly paste-like consistency. This gives lashes the appearance of greater substance. Its pale shade provides an additional benefit, as it immediately reveals whether every individual lash has been coated.
Mascara is only applied afterwards. Thanks to the layer already built up, black or brown colour appears more intense. The lashes gain extra definition without requiring countless coats. A single layer of mascara applied over the base can look like two to three layers without this intermediate step.
Why eyelash bases are becoming a trend again
Products designed as a foundation for lashes have existed for some time, but they were previously seen more as a niche item for professionals. In an era of false lashes, lash lifts and eyelash serums, they are making an unexpected comeback – particularly because many women are seeking a lighter alternative to long-lasting treatments.
A primer combines several effects in one step:
- Building volume: Each lash appears to be coated more thickly.
- Boosting length: The tips are visibly emphasised before colour is applied over them.
- Improved curl: After curling with eyelash curlers, lashes retain their shape more reliably.
- More intense colour: Black or brown looks noticeably richer against the pale base.
- Fewer coats: The desired effect is achieved with less mascara – which is gentler on the lashes.
This is especially appealing for everyday wear: the eyes look more awake and defined, without the heavy, clumped appearance many associate with too much mascara. Rather than grouped-together “spider legs”, the result is a separated fan of lashes with a more structured look.
How a primer changes the look from the first brush stroke
When applying it, the pale colour of the base is the first thing that stands out. It coats every lash and instantly makes any small gaps visible. At this stage alone, the lashes already appear fuller and more orderly. The primer separates the fine hairs and helps prevent them from sticking together later in thick strands.
When mascara is used in the second step, the difference is usually noticeable straight away: the brush moves across a layer that has already been shaped. The colour attaches to the base rather than being applied directly to bare lashes. The result appears:
- fuller at the roots,
